OVERVIEW OF THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF WATER-BASED FLAME-RETARDANT COATINGS FOR METAL STRUCTURES
To protect metal structures from the effects of flame, fire-resistant compounds are used; these are classified as passive fire protection. Under the influence of high temperatures, these materials form a heat-insulating barrier that prevents the rapid heating of metal elements. By keeping the metal temperature below the critical value, the structure retains its strength for the duration required for people to evacuate. Therefore, in the context of a strategy to reduce the fire hazard of facilities, fire-retardant treatment of metal structures plays a fundamental role. The study compares the physical characteristics and properties of a number of water-based fire-retardant paints used to protect metal structures, such as the degree of grinding, apparent viscosity of the composition, density, consumption rate for a 1 mm coating, coating adhesion,
drying time, application and operating temperature, as well as service life.
